Toronto’s MADE hosts an exhibit of new works by local artists Amanda McCavour and Kirsten White.
Amanda McCavour, who most recently exhibited a gauzy, dreamlike room at the Gladstone Hotel’s annual Come Up To My Room exhibit, introduces Ice Box, a new installation of snow-like crystals formed entirely from thread. McCavour’s feathery hexagons have been painstakingly created by embroidering a water-soluble material that dissolves to leave nothing but the stitching. The remaining networks of thread are then assembled into sculptures. Her delicate works render images with ghostly two-dimensional transparency, in this case capturing the fragility of ephemeral snow crystals.
Kirsten White’s I Will Follow is a collection of photographs presented in conjunction with the CONTACT photography festival. This series features images of a solitary male figure trekking through exotic sand-blown landscapes. These images were shot over a period of many years, but have been meticulously cherry-picked from a much larger collection to produce a new theme. By removing them from their original context and placing them in a different one, White creates a new history for the photos, revealing how our intimate relationships with people and spaces seem to change when revisited years later.
Both exhibits launch tonight with an opening reception at MADE (867 Dundas St. W.) from 7 to 9 p.m. I Will Follow runs until May 31 and Ice Box runs until June 30.
