Design Icons: 1985 to Now

Azure turns 30. To celebrate we have produced an exclusive journal highlighting seminal moments in architecture and design, from the rise of the Memphis Group to the evolution of smart technology, driverless cars and net-zero energy buildings. Click here for the mobile version.

A lot has changed since Azure first launched in 1985. Back then, Jonathan Ive’s colourful Apple iMac was still years away, LEDs and 3D-printing were the stuff of science fiction, and building green was an off-beat specialization practiced by a few mavericks working well ahead of the curve.

Azure has tracked and reported on these profound moments, and many more breakthrough innovations from around the globe, mapping out the lightening-speed in which design has evolved. To honour our 30-year milestone, we have poured over 235 past issues of Azure and compiled this special 34-page 30th Anniversary Journal. Available exclusively online and in the digital edition of the May anniversary issue, the journal highlights the key people, events, spaces, objects and ideas that have shaped design and architecture over the past three decades.

We hope you enjoy the read and look forward to hearing from you.
