Located in the small town of Bridel, the Boos Beach Club Restaurant is a surprisingly modern addition to the original house. Enveloped in folded wood, the paper-like extension wraps around the existing building.
Inspired by origami, the extension’s pleated roof resembles a folded sheet of paper. By using little more than glass, wood and polished concrete, local architecture firm Metaform has given the building a light, contemporary touch.
The triangulated wooden roof is not only self-supporting – requiring few peripheral structural points – it can be easily removed, allowing for future modification.
Floor-to-ceiling windows afford bright views of the surrounding landscape. As project leads Shahram Agaajani and Matthieu Ristic explain to Azure, “the project is tucked between the trees in a subtle way. Nature is the first thing visitors clearly perceive from the inside.”
While the front of the extension presents a unified surface, the rear is staggered, allowing for more glimpses of the neighbouring woods. Framed by a white sand beach, a further addition by Metaform, the wooden terrace offers still more opportunities to take in the view.
Perhaps the most striking interior feature is the restaurant’s central bar, where a fleet of 120 light-globes, made by Zangra, floats squarely overhead. From here and in the adjoining rooms patrons can eat, drink and lounge in a cozy, charred-wood-panelled space.
Constructed in just under four months, the 600-square-metre space is a noteworthy addition to the club. Metaform also designed the interior, in consultation with Njoy architectes d’intérieur.
