Following a strong debut last year, the Toronto International Design Festival returns with an expanded program that includes the first annual Do West Design event. From January 27 to 30, Dundas Street West (between Bathurst and Grace streets) transforms into a giant exhibition space, with contemporary works on display in 28 venues, including storefronts, bars, showrooms, and even a lumber yard.
Among the highlights, the Capacity show at design shop Bookhou brings together 10 local female practitioners – including photographer Ayla Newhouse and industrial designer Joy Charbonneau. The participants explore what the concept of Capacity means in a range of media, from textiles and furniture to sculpture and ceramics (798 Dundas St. W.).
This year, Made’s annual Canadian design showcase is aptly named Made At Home. Organizers Shaun Moore and Julie Nicholson transform the showroom into an ordinary apartment and spotlight brand new pieces – by designers such as Connie Chisholm and Orest Tataryn – that explore the objects people choose to live with (867 Dundas St. W.).
Further west at the Heartbreaker Salon, Dundas’ newest manicure spot, the latest offerings from edgy wallpaper studio Rollout are on display (889 Dundas St. W.), while textile and ceramic artist Katherine Morley exhibits works from her quirky collection at charcuterie joint The Black Hoof (928 Dundas St. W.).
