IMM Cologne, the first furniture fair of the year, kicks off on Tuesday.

IMM is Germany’s biggest furniture fair, and an excuse for the entire city’s transformation into a design denizen’s playground. At the fair, hundreds of exhibitors – including renowned German manufacturers Draenert, Cor and Walter Knoll as well as international brands Ligne Roset, Kasthall and Calligaris – show off their latest and greatest. Meanwhile, special features like D3 Design Talents and the Boulevard of Innovations provide ample opportunity to discover young designers and innovative concepts. If you just can’t get enough, Design Post, situated near the fairgrounds, hosts even more companies within its vast, vaulted-ceiling warehouse.

And if you still need more, there’s nearly 200 events spread out around the city as part of Passagen, a programme of events focussing on innovative interior design. You can check out special exhibits spotlighting works by Tokujin Yoshioka and Jerszy Seymour; newly acquired furnishings by Belgian label FELD and designer Bram Boo are at the Now is Here showroom; and the absolutely do-not-miss Designers Fair 2011 showcases the imaginative work by emerging designers.

IMM is open to trade members on January 18 to 20, and to the general public from January 21 to 23.

Passagen runs from January 17 to 23.
