The iconic fashion designer brings haute couture to her inaugural collection for French furniture manufacturer Roche Bobois – available in stores in May.

Known for her vibrant, fun-fur sweaters of the 80s and for pioneering printed words on garments, the Paris-born “Queen of Knits” now presents Sonia Rykiel Maison – her first collaboration with Roche Bobois. The furniture line – with pieces designed by Roche Bobois’s Philippe Bouix – employs the striped motif of her Spring/Summer 2011 runway collection, which encompasses every shade imaginable, but takes it a hue brighter. Upholstered in warm shades of red, blush, fuschia, violet and lavender contrasted against deep brown or black backgrounds, the collection carries the theme of amour throughout.

A streamlined yet plush velvet sofa and a striped wool rug available in four candy and floral-inspired shades form the two cornerstones of the collection. Accented in lace, the line’s velvet and satin cushions come in a multitude of playful motifs, including florals and stripes – and one is even emblazoned with the words “home chic home.” Towels, bedding and beanbag chairs round out the charming collection.

Maison is the first foray into the world of interiors for the designer once named one of the world’s 10 most elegant women. Previous partnerships include two masstige collections with Swedish apparel retailer H&M, as well as a musical collaboration with English performer Malcolm McLaren for the song “Who the Hell is Sonia Rykiel?” on his Paris album. Roche Bobois previously collaborated with another great French coutourier – Jean Paul Gaultier – on a furniture collection.

Sonia Rykiel Maison is available in May at Roche Bobois stores worldwide.
