Ones to watch at Design Miami

The art-design mecca Design Miami is on until December 4. Here are the top five reasons to hit the beach.

This year’s show boasts double the participating galleries, a talk series featuring some of the world’s top architects and designers – including Norman Foster and Patricia Urquiola – and several on-site exhibitions and installations.

1 Designer of the Year David Adjaye has created a wooden pavilion in the shape of triangular prism that greets visitors at the fair’s entrance. Known for such private commissions as the Elektra House and Dirty House and the recently completed Moscow School of Management, the London architect has clad his structure’s roof, walls, floors and built-in furniture with timber.

2 New York’s Demisch Danant gallery is showcasing 20 pieces by French designer Pierre Paulin, including his curvaceous red and black Amphis sofa. See Paulin’s iconic designs from the 1960s and 1970s for Artifort, including his laminated wood and nylon cord Spider Chair.

5 At the Luminaire Lab, which has expanded its Design District showroom to include kitchen, bath and outdoor furnishings, do-gooders can get some extra karma points at DesignLove, an auction/exhibition featuring original works made from an A4-sized sheet of DuPont’s Corian. Tokujin Yoshioka, Jean-Marie Massaud, Tom Dixon and other heavy hitters have created objects d’art to be auctioned off in support of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Centre at the University of Miami.
