Five times lucky: Tokyo’s Moment designs its fifth interior for Issey Miyake.
Based on the concept of a chaotic Japanese convenient store, 24 Issey Miyake – designed by Moment’s Hisaaki Hirawata and Tomohiro Watabe – is a fresh, casual retail environment comprised of simple elements. Most shops are designed to change their visual displays, but unable to regularly perform this feat due to complicated fixtures. So Hirawata and Watabe made ease of flexibility an imperative when designing the shop that would house Issey Miyake’s constantly updated labels.
Much like Miyake’s design philosophy – and the foldable Bilbao Prism bag pictured – the all-white Sapporo shop modulates seamlessly into a variety of styles depending on the seasonal merchandise. Recessed into the walls of the space are 100 numbered panels that fold out into shelving, and can also be controlled remotely at head office. Poles inserted into discreet perforations between each panel accommodate hung merchandise, while moveable cases on the shop floor are affixed with wheels to facilitate frequent display changes. The space’s minimal aesthetic is rounded out with white floors and two clear acrylic stools at the checkout point.
Moment Inc. is an award-winning multi-disciplinary firm established in 2005. They are the recipient of 15 awards including a 2011 JCD Best 100 Design Award for Bao Bao Issey Miyake in Tamagawa, as well as others for graphic and display design. Other interiors for Issey Miyake Inc. include the 24 in Hakata, Me in Tainan and Takashima Kazuaki (Miyake’s former protégé and now subsidiary).
