At the Jil Sander showroom on the outskirts of the Brera Design District, Kvadrat presented works from both established and emerging designers – including Doshi Levien, Atelier Takagi and AZ AWARDS judge Jeffrey Bernett – that reinterpret the iconic fabric Hallingdal 65.
Design lovers and journalists were treated to flutes of champagne and a sprawling installation of functional furnishings and quirky concepts that all incorporated the classic wool-and-cotton blend created by Nanna Ditzel in 1965.
London design studio Raw Edges created the Selvedge chair. Using offcuts, the duo emphasized the linear component of Hallingdal 65, by unweaving it in specific places and stretching it to create the form of a chair. And Doshi Levien (whose principals, Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien, were in attendance) re-worked its Principessa daybed for Moroso.
Meanwhile, Jean Baptiste Fastrez showed off an elaborate re-imagination of the ubiquitous hammock. Suspended above a stepped entrance, the piece is woven from varous shades of Hallingdal 65 in blue, green and white, with the ends left to dangle like tassles. Fredrikson Stallard created a low-lying table by rolling the textile, propping it up on short gold legs and securing it with a gold belt buckle.
The show was definitely the place to be seen during Milan design week. Spotted in the crowd were such guests as Konstantin Grcic, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, as well as the participating designers.
Hallingdal 65 is on view until April 22 at the Jil Sander showroom at via Luca Beltrami 5.
