The biennial trade show kicked off on April 15 in Frankfurt with hundreds of exhibitors debuting stunning decorative fixtures. Innovations from Ingo Maurer, Flos, Selux and more caught our attention on day one.
1 Manta Rhei by Selux
Berlin’s Selux partnered with media design studio Art+Com to create a kinetic suspension fixture that houses 140 paper-thin OLEDs controlled by a custom-built driver. The strips wave softly, mimicking the movement of a manta ray.
2 Apps by Flos
The Italian manufacturer showed off Jorge Herrera‘s Apps, a series of wall-mounted wayfinding fixtures for the Soft Architecture collection. A single LED provides two light sources; one to illuminate the sign, the other to frame the background. It’s also Cradle-to-Cradle certified.
3 Luce Volante by Ingo Maurer
Made with fibreglass, plastic and metal, this fixture is suspended from three wires that can be adjusted so that it hovers above the dining table at just the right angle. Three LEDs provide downlighting, while one provides uplighting. Luce Volante comes in various colours.
4 IN-EI by Artemide
Artemide constructed a cave-like pavilion for the launch of Issey Miyake‘s inimitable light works. Created with a program that translates a 3D geometric formula into various shapes, the series of pendants, table lamps and floor lights are crafted from a single piece of recycled fabric.
5 Squeeze by Nimbus
This sculptural number – available in white, black and pink – is designed by none other than Karim Rashid. Nimbus, based in Stuttgart, worked with Rashid to create a suspended or wall-mounted fixture that evokes an undulating landscape.
6 Brisa by Vibia
This outdoor collection by Lievore, Altherr, Molina is inspired by wild bell flowers. The svelte, delicate and discreet lamps are finished in khaki and matte oxide lacquer.
