Last week, the Architectural Digest Home Design Show in New York presented new wares from emerging designers – in Brooklyn and beyond – in a section called Made. Here are six that caught our eye, from the likes of Fort Standard, Asher Israelow and Bower.
1 Crest and Platter by Fort Standard
For their inaugural Architectural Digest show, Brooklyn team Gregory Buntain and Ian Collings, who recently made Forbes’ 30 Under 30 List, exhibited their line crafted of marble, walnut and brass. These Crest bottle openers, cast in solid and durable brass, are designed with a minimal amount of material, and shown atop a Carrara marble platter which features a surface-protecting, hand-stamped leather bottom.
2 Writing Desk by Chris Earl
Chris Earl studied studio and liberal arts at Chapman University and is based in Los Angeles. He apprenticed with fine furniture maker Steve Ritson, and has developed his own take on creating classic pieces. This American walnut and rock maple table topped in polished glass features proprietary brass splice joints and solid brass stretcher rods.
3 Strut by Souda
Brooklyn trio Souda was inspired by the Manhattan Bridge and the construction techniques of early aircraft carriers for its modular shelving system. The maple planks, suspended via powder-coated and plated fixtures, were glammed up for the show in a new black finish accented by shiny copper.
4 Shape by Bower
RISD alumni Danny Giannella and Tammer Hijazi presented these Cube and Cylinder mirrors framed in wood, alongside their Pickup stool in a new dark finish. In May, the one-year old Brooklyn duo will participate in Bernhardt Design’s ICFF Studio, a platform to match selected emerging designers and their prototypes with potential manufacturers.
5 Anamorphic by Asher Israelow
An architect and fine arts major from RISD, Brooklyn’s Asher Israelow inlaid solid brass into his new American walnut console, which from the right angle forms a perfect square. This mathematical approach to design is a running scheme among his pieces and helped land him on Forbes’ 30 Under 30 List.
